Event Details

His Holiness the Sakya Trizin, 41st Head of the Sakya Lineage of Tibetan Buddhism

His Holiness the 41st Sakya Trizin is the head of the Sakya School, which is one of the four main schools of Tibetan Buddhism. Born in Tibet in 1945, His Holiness belongs to the ancient and distinguished Khön family, whose history extends back to the early days of Tibet, before the arrival of Buddhism. His Holiness is one of the most learned among Tibetan Buddhist masters in both Buddhist Sutra and Tantra, and he embodies the complete qualities of a highly accomplished meditator. After leaving Tibet in 1959 due to the Chinese occupation, he re-established the seat of the Sakya Order in exile in Rajpur, India, building a monastery there known as Sakya Centre. Since that time, he has worked tirelessly to preserve the thousand-year-old religious heritage of the Sakya Order and to transmit its teachings to succeeding generations.

His Holiness the Sakya Trizin has been praised by His Holiness the Dalai Lama as "King of Vajrayana practitioners', and is respected by all four schools of Tibetan Buddhism. He is renowned throughout the world for the brilliance and clarity of his teachings and his fluency and precise command of English. His visit to the western hempisphere (his last visit to Calgary was in the late 1970s) offers a rare opportunity and experience for people of all faiths and interests.
